Seniors Pohutukawa trip 2008
On the 26th April 2008, the seniors met in the Botany countdown car park at 10am to get together in groups and set off in convoy along the Pohutukawa coastline. The roundtrip started by going through Clevedon where the first port o call was 'The Chocolate shop'. Difficult to get the seniors out of the shop as the chocolates were delectable. The next stop in the village was 'The Woolshed' which had lovely inexpensive souvenirs. At this point we were set on a long journey on the wrong road as the road sign had been turned! We were not to know! So instead of heading for the wine farm we ended up at Kawakawa Bay along the most spectacular coastline. Only then was the mistake realised. By then it was lunchtime and a shared lunch was enjoyed on the beach. The journey continued along the coastline through Maraetai, towards Whitford. The Whitford Bird Garden, owned and run by wildlife artist Blake Twigden, was an unusual experience and very different to bird parks any of the seniors had been to. The last stop was the 'River Estate Olive oil farm'. A wonderful experience as it was the first time any of us had seen or heard how olive oil is made. The demonstration and tasting was excellent. Afternoon tea prepared by the owners Barry and Sheryl was really welcomed before we finally completed the circuit in Botany by 4:30pm. The Clevedon ramble, with all it twists and turns will be remembered fondly by a group of enthused and tired seniors.
